homeopathy has been recomended to me, have yet to try it. Don't have the money at the moment.
I have tried refexology. Which has an effect, although small.
and Faith Healing, which is obviously a blag, but I'll give anything a try in an attempt to give me a better quality of life.

My problem is that when I see it in the movies in some context it looks cool enough. But to have someone sitting right across me, someone from "the real world", going on about that shit (even though it's for real or not, it does sound corny) and even in norwegian which takes away the element of the cool movie line. i know you love dutch though.
I "tried" it since always. I don't take "normal" medicines, I only do homeopathy. I thought it's all bullshit but it's not.
There were times when I suffered from salmonella and my normal doctor told me that there's no way to cure it without hard antibiotic and eventually hospital visit. The other doctor I used to visit because of my allergy gave me some light homeopathic cures and they worked. I've been feeling better with each day and after a week I was as fit as a fiddle.
I relied on it and it helped me.
I had a similar thing with acute sinusitis or whatever it's called in english.
Now whenever I feel bad I go to that doctor, she gives me some of her medicines and it just works.
I even cured most of my allergies.
But anyway that doctor is quite famous as she finished Medical studies in few biggest European universities and then got interested in homeopathy while studying in Asia.
Unfortunately many homeopahic doctors suck ass and their cures are just placebo. You have to know the good one or find one depending on his/her diplomas or your own experience.
So if you'll find a good doctor, homeopathy is an awesome and really underrated thing.

If some tribesman gets "cured" by a witchdoctor then no I wouldn't equate it with intelligence. But in the western world? Maybe gullible is a better word.

It appeals to me simply because I read the "side-effects" section of "normal" medication. I'd like a cure that doesn't possibly cause erectile disfunction, nausea, sleeping problems, dizziness, low blood pressure, vomiting, irritability etc. And the fact that a lot of recreational drugs used to be labeled medicine doesn't exactly reassure me.

Apparently it's cheaper than regular drugs ... I mean medicine. I've already wasted my money on at least 6 types of overpriced medication that didn't work and gave me unwanted side-effects (No, not erectile disfunction. I was never able to get it up in the first place) so I wouldn't consider it a waste of money.

It doesn't matter if you live in a mud hut or a mansion, you can still trick yourself into thinking something has an effect that it doesn't. Look at the people who think that their prayers to god have cured them of cancer. The fact that people think that taking a substance, diluting it to the point that there isn't a single molecule of it left, an then drinking it actually has a physical, medical effect, shows you that people are easily fooled.

Of course it is scientific but not everything homeopathic is the same thing. There is a lot of bullshit in it, of course but there are homeopathic remedies which in fact work and are used worldwide. Some are even used in hospitals while there are few illnesses that can be only cured by homeopathic drugs. I myself am interested in biology and science overall, I've been watching and reading a lot of things about alternative medicine and most of all it helped me. Good homeopathy is really underrated and that's because there are too many branches (doctors, institutes and companies creating placebo drugs) that make it look like something irrational - something that doesn't work.
Most medicines are created by big companies and they want people to use their medicines exclusively. The truth is that some homeopathic remedies could replace antibiotics or other heavy "drugs". There are also few minor things that homeopathy can heal which casual medicine won't heal.
The problem is that among great doctors, there are many many fake ones. Because alternative medicine is not as formal as normal medicine a nobody can open his own clinic and "heal" people giving them placebo drugs. So while you're in the hospital you most probably won't encounter a fake doctor while in alternative medicine it's more than possible, and that's that thing giving it a bad name.

I meant that those people (I'm speaking in stereotypes) don't know any better. Growing up in an environment where a witchdoctor is considered to be an actual doctor is quite different from someone in the western world relying on being cured by twigs. Wisdom has nothing to do with knowledge but more knowledge allows for more wisdom.
I have no doubt that, like masta said, there is a lot of bullshit in homeopathy but I can't say that I take those studies at face value. Licensed medication didn't do shit so I doubt that the placebo effect will work on me. I'll see if it works once I get around to it.

I think you are over reacting.
As for Cancer. What is the treatment now? Cut out the tumor and bombard the whole body with radiation killing every cell in sight. That is an advancement in medicine isn't it?
No-one is saying abandon modern medicine. But to rule something out simply because you don't understand it is a little silly. Why shouldn't it be used as an accompanyment to modern medicine? And if it works, be it via healing properties or placebo then it is positive. I'd never suggest people stop using conventional medicine, but if you suffer from an incureable disease or a chronic illness then you are prepared to try anything to stop the discomfort or make your life a little more pleasurable. I speak from experience.
And for Hypochondriacs, GP's just diagnose IBS and tell them to change their lifestyle. Not an expensive alternative medicine.
