Stephen Hawking, the famous British physicist, called the notion of heaven a "fairy story" in an interview with The Guardian newspaper published today.

The physicist, 69, who was diagnosed with A.L.S. at age 21, made the heaven comment in response to a question about his fears of death.

"I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first," he told the newspaper.

"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven of afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people who are afraid of the dark."

The worst thing, I've seen so called "religious" people make personal attacks on Hawking for remarks like this, basically saying his lack of "faith" is the reason for his condition. If I could have slapped the shit out of someone through a computer monitor, I would have done it for that comment. Fucking disgusting.

Because he is smarter than all of us, knows the inner workings of some of the deepest mysteries of the universe, and what not.

Basically, disagreeing with him over this matter is saying he's wrong. It boils down to reason, logic and rationale. Sadly, people of faith are generally lacking in these areas.

If you want to call Stephen Hawking wrong, you better be able to back up that shit and say why. I don't see anybody doing that.

Some will say the issue is more complex than that. My point is that it doesn't have to be.

But he's not smarter than any of us in regards to what happens when you die. We're all total idiots on that one. Is his scenario more likely? To me, yes. But if someone disagrees, it doesn't make them less intelligent. It makes them (perhaps) worse at guessing games.

@Prize Gotti, no, I don't think I'm smarter than Stephen Hawking. I also wasn't disagreeing with him. I was saying that people who happen to disagree with him forfeit none of their intelligence by doing so. Are they wrong? Yeah, I think so. Are they dumber than him? Most definitely. But having a different opinion about something nobody knows for sure does not make you a fool. I have a distaste for that kind of militancy of thought.

Intelligence is based on logical and rational thought. Theres no logic or rationality in anything with mythical value.

Intelligence is based on more than that. Rational thought is important, so is open-mindedness. When atheists dismiss all believers as stupid, they're guilty of the same fundamentalism they claim to despise.

I think that's an outrageous claim. I'm sure you don't mean to, but you're dismissing the value of human imagination. The world might be safer if we'd never dreamed up religion, but it would be a lot more boring without literature and movies and music and all the other things that have "mythical value." Im Agnostic, not Athiest. I don't know if theres a God, but from logic and rational thought I know the concept of it is rediculous.

Think of it this way, if science existed before religion, would there be any religion at all?
