your question needs to be more specific. asking which make is better is like asking kelloggs or post cereal? it leaves a wide range of answers. but if you break it down to frosted flakes or grape nuts, you can get a more specific answer.
any car you buy around that price range is going to most likely be old, falling apart, and have high miles, so you will need to be expecting to put it into the shop with in the first 6 months to a year and probably a good 1000 dollars worth of repairs. i'm speaking on experience. all the cars i have ever owned have all been used the mileage no lower than 74,000.
do some research at edmunds.com for any specific cars, the make model and year, you are looking for and read the customer reviews.,

If you want something lasting, I'd take that 2500 bucks and go buy a older Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. For 2500 you might be able to get a '93-'94, but of course itll have over 100,000.. My friend had a '93 Accord with like 260,000 miles on it but it still ran like a champ when he traded it in.. Of course, it wasnt too pretty though.

O2 sensor is fairly cheap and easy to replace. Sounds like a good deal. But I don't think I'm buy American cars anymore I'm in the market for a new used car also Syn. Domestic cars suck! Best to go with Honda or Toyota those cars are known for hitting 300k Miles an still go strong. Most domestic hit 150k an start having issues. But hey go with what you like an what you have the $$ for!
