Late afternoon, I got a call from Stefan telling me he was leaving his home in Oakland on his way to a hotel in Los Angeles. He was heading to Terminal Island Federal Penitentiary the following afternoon.
Why didn't he head in the opposite direction?
Seriously, who gets to voluntarily take themselves to a Penitentiary? Don't you have a trial, get found guilty, and get hauled off to prison immediately?
Anyway, tell him to look me up when he gets there, I've got some pull. I'll look out for him (for cigarettes, of course.)
But seriously, it's a Federal prison so it's not as rough as a regular one. Low security. Low security institutions have dormitory housing, not prison cells, and a relatively low staff-to-inmate ratio.
Also, they got a good shop there repairing, refurbishing, and reconditioning furniture and office equipment, which I'm sure he'll be doing at some point.
They've got 60-inch 1080p HDTVs in every dorm. The screen is set amid a glossy black frame, and a pair of suspended speakers extend a good 5 inches beyond the frame — making it exceptionally wide for a 60-inch set.
I liked the solid feel of the brushed-metal remote, especially the big cursor control, but I would have appreciated better differentiation among keys as well as some kind of illumination, fuckin prison!
Remember, in an unjust society the only place for a just man to be is in prison.
