Selling out?

How would you define selling-out? Does it annoy you in any way, or make you think of an artist in a different way?

I've never done anything that I would consider to be "selling-out".
However, when I saw this, it raised a few questions:

Now, I don't have an issue with Wal-Mart selling my music. Hell, if iit gets one sale because of it being there, then it's worth it to me since that's one more person that has heard it.

But what if I did have issues with Wal-Mart as a corporation? I don't, for the record, but from what I understand, LOTS of people do. A quick google search of the terms "walmart evil" comes up with thousands of results claiming all sorts of wrong-doings.

If I had a problem with the company because of this, but let them sell my product regardless, would that be "selling-out"? Is it even worse if I'm aware that they do fucked-up shit but don't care?

I would like to hear your thoughts.

i dont think its selling out, a band critized rage against the machine for being signed to epic records and voicing commitment to leftist causes. Tom Morello replied

“ When you live in a capitalistic society, the currency of the dissemination of information goes through capitalistic channels. Would Noam Chomsky object to his works being sold at Barnes & Noble? No, because that's where people buy their books. We're not interested in preaching to just the converted. It's great to play abandoned squats run by anarchists, but it's also great to be able to reach people with a revolutionary message, people from Granada Hills to Stuttgart.
not really the same situation your in but it still applies

My definition of a sell out (from people to people, from one person to another) comes from years of looking at myself (my actions) and the person I am, as well as looking at my friends and how they are and act towards me and other people, which made me come to an understanding that everyone in this world no matter who they are (except GOD) or what they do will make mistakes and one person's views won't be the same as another's so if I call someone a sell out, doesn't mean its true because I would be basing that over what I see, and not what GOD see's.

If you really think about it we all don't know each other as well as we think we do. Tupac said that instead of people judging him for one action, if they are going to judge him, they should judge him from begining to end just like GOD judges us.

We can't call someone a sell out just because they do one or two or a few things that don't look right to us because it might look right to them and they might have a different understanding and a different sense of maturity then ourselves.

Not everyone is in the same boat when it comes to personal views and opinions, so lets all try and understand that just because we're angry at someone and we end up calling him or her or them a sell out, doesnt mean its true, and just because someone else calls us a sell out doesnt mean its true either. But that doesn't mean you can't call them a BITCH because of the fucked up things they do to you (but use your common sense here), because people do some hurtful and fucked up things sometimes too and even though it won't always be okay afterwards, we should still forgive and forget no matter what.

This might not fit in the same context as with what your telling us, but this is my opinion on selling out.

You know sofi will mock you because of this post, right?

If you are working in the music industry i dont think there is a chance for you to act 100% correct, moral-wise.

and where exactly is that possible? If you work for a bank for example, you are far away from beein 100% correct moral wise in my opinion..... we live in a capitalistic society, everybody gotta look after himself to a certain point, no one really is 100% correct in my view - but it's sellin out if you forget about your principles, and cross a certain line - but everybody gotta define that line for himself I guess.

yeah i know..why tho? i want to get in the music industry big time so im asking for ur opinion so tell me why baby tell me why...
Because so many things are connected with each other. In the case of Militant for example: He knows walmart is selling his product which leads to him earning money. On the other hand he knows damn well that walmart has some troubles concerning the treatment of their employees and other things. So he kinda earns money at the expense of other peoples disadvantages. I dont think thats right, morally.

I would have to think about for some time to get a proper answer but, right now off the top of my head i would say: If you are a friar/monk living in a monastery i think you are pretty close to living a good life, in terms of moral correctness.

Doesn't that depend on your own morals?
Of course it does. If someone says its morally correct for whatever reasons to punch someone it doesnt make it right because he has his own morals. I think there is some universal moral correctness (yes, somebody else might think different about it).

But it's Walmarts fault that they are treating their employees badly, not Militant's fault. Militant isn't earning money at other people's disadvantages like you said, WALMART IS by not paying there employees properly. Even though what you said seems to be true, Walmart has money, I just think they spend that money where they wan't, with what they wan't and who they wan't, and their employeess just arent getting as much as they should because of it.

Militant (or any other artist) is supporting walmart by letting them sell their product! Walmart earns money because of them although its just 0.00000000001% of everything they earn.

In theory, if no one would buy anymore products from walmart because people know about walmarts problem and they have other options to buy what they need, im sure walmart would change their behaviour.

It means no weed for you anymore though.

Sebastian is right - If I took a moral stance against Walmart...and eventually so did everyone else, there would be no Walmart.

But since that is NEVER gonna happen, fuck it...imma get paid. :D

I'm intrigued by the idea of a "universal moral correctness", though. It definately doesn't exist. Sebastian, what you refer to can probably stretch as far as intelligent individuals and that's about it. It certainly doesn't apply amongst groups, religious factions, etc.
