Religion

People who criticise religion are probably sceptics and have no business to call themselves religious in the first place.

Its like a scientist criticizing a philosopher.

"To criticize a person for their race is manifestly irrational and ridiculous but to criticize their religion, that is a right. That is a freedom. The freedom to criticize ideas, any ideas - even if they are sincerely held beliefs - is one of the fundamental freedoms of society. A law which attempts to say you can criticize and ridicule ideas as long as they are not religious ideas is a very peculiar law indeed." - Rowan Atkinson

Do you agree?

In the post 9/11 world, I've noticed that some people have gotten very hesitant about criticizing Islam. Now, you'll say, "No way man, just go to the closest bookstore", but I mean the common people. In the state I live in, people tend to be very liberal and some believe that criticizing a person's religion is offensive and discriminatory. I don't agree.

Like Mr. Bean :) said, you should be free to criticize an idea (Islam) regardless of whether there are millions of people who sincerely believe in to be absolute truth.
I agree very much so.

But to touch on Islam, it really doesn't deserve the shit that it gets thrown. I mean most of the "criticism" that it has endured is the result of ignorance (whether modern or deep cultural ignorance)...

So, you find it wrong to criticize an "idea", something far from a fact? What is NOT a skeptic then?

It depends how the idea is criticized; for a scientist would criticize differently to how a philosopher would.

I can imagine there being an argument as to wether religion is defined as a social science or a foundation for ethics.

I don't think fact has a place in religion, or its ideals. You want prove that there is a God? ... then your criticisms lie in philosophy, not religion.
