Quake off the coast of California:tsunami warning

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - A major earthquake struck Tuesday night about 80 miles off the coast of northern California, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the
U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

A tsunami warning was in effect from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

Yeah that generally happens when a big event like the Boxing Day Tsunami happens, all of a sudden natural disasters that usually would get overlooked get hyped up more than usual. Just wait a year or so when they've forgotten all about it we wont hear shit.

does anyone know how far a tsunami can travel inland? i live around 45 km from the pacific coast i don't know if i should worry about a large tsunami or something. but an earthquake is a different story. as long as you dont live on a delta..

maybe not big like 9.0's

but there have been alot mentioned on the news the past year usualy ranging from like 5-7 on the scale. iran , japan, india, cali, and a few others this year already i think

Holy Crap!


I'm not sure how far they reach but they do go inland fairly far from what I've heard, if you live on higher ground your more than likely safe though.

I got all scared last night :(. They didnt tell me that its pretty much impossible for a tsunami to happen off the coast of California because the plates slide sideways instead of up and down. I guess i should have payed attention in school.
