It must have been years of psychological abuse. She must have bothering him too much about his drug problem. He probably didn't have a job, or had one, but it was only supporting his drug habit. His mother was constantly nagging about his future. "what are you gonna do with your life!..." - that question must have drove him crazy. One day he just snapped. It happens. She shouldn't have taken away his stash.
