It also depends on how long ago the persons family moved to Australia. The longer the stronger the accent. I'm first generation for my family so I have a good mix of Aussie & English, but someone who's like 5 generation they'll have a much stronger Aussie accent.
Also theres some words English ppl use thats the same as Aussies.

Hehe one of my favourite Aussie expressions.

Don't forget classics as 'fully sick' (very good) and 'bloody oath' (hell yeah)! I've also heard 'tafe' in a context that implies something is shit or very average despite TAFE actually being an educational institution lol.

There's also a tendancy to shorten things to 'O'. Example: I'll see you 'this arvo' instead of 'this afternoon', or I'm going to drink some 'metho' instead of 'mentholated spirits'. You get the idea.

As far as I'm concerened the English, Australians and South Africans all have very different accents, and their different regions have very different fluctuations and varients. Those from Melbourne sound the most English to me.

Americans often fail to tell an Aussie accent from an English one (not that there's such thing as a single "English" accent) and Brits often can't tell the difference between an Aussie accent and a South African one.

Are you serious? South African and Aussie accents are a world apart.

You from England initially Jess?
Both my parents were born in England, I was born in Australia.

Some South African accents are similar to Aussies, my brother was asked if he was South African at work once.
