i was racing this GTI a few nights back and i decided to shift 1st and 2nd past the red line. When it passed the red line, i heard a "pop" come out of my exhaust...whats tha deal?

Usually shifting slightly past redline (say, 100 or 200 rpm above) isn't that big of a deal if it happens every once in a while. But if you shifted 500 or more rpm above redline, then that might be a problem. Where did the pop come from? Sometimes in modified cars with turbos, they "pop" at high rpms when flames shoot out of the tailpipes, so perhaps pushing the car that much made your car do that.

its a 96 VW Golf with a Magnaflow exhaust. I should stop pushing her that hard...she's only running at like 115, 120 hp

Hihi, yeah, if we're talking brutal Supra's maybe. This is a simple Golf.

Pella, how you even gonna be sure that it actually was a pop that actually came from your exhaust?

If it happens like every time, be worried. But seriously, cars make noises. If I'd be getting worried everytime it made some weird sound I'd be still worried when i'm 70.

"Brutal" Supras yes, but it's not impossible for a lot of cars to do it, especially turbocharged ones. Even Mazda RX-8s (which do not have turbos) with aftermarket catback exhausts can spit out flames (I have a video of one doing that) because the car runs rich from the factory.

im just sure. I heard it. I had both my windows and sunroof wide open...plus i know how my exhaust sounds like, it was def. mine  but whatever, its all good now i guess. I thought it was kinda of a v-tec thing like Hondas have...guess not.

sounds like backfire, which seems ok since youre pushing the car pretty hard. now if it was happening in normal driving, then youd have to be worried.
