OUR CHANGING LANGUAGE

The new edition of the Collins English Dictionary has listed 1,500 words for the first time reflecting changes in society and culture.

Here are some of them:

Chav - "a young working-class person who dresses in casual sports clothes (perhaps from Romany chavi - a child)".
The dictionary also includes Chavette (the female equivalent), and the adjectives Chavish and Chavtastic.
Other so-called tribes included are Skanger (similar definition, but Irish slang), Yarco (East Anglian) and Ned (Scottish).

The cultural make-up of Britain is reflected in the 26 words of Hinglish - words of joint Hindi and English derivation - including:

Badmash - "naughty or bad"
Freshie - "a new immigrant to the UK from the Asian subcontinent"
Haramzada - "a male born of unmarried parents or an obnoxious or despicable male"

Some words have been coined from sport:

Bouncebackability - "the ability to recover after a setback, esp in sport"
Chin music - "bowling or pitching aimed at the batsman or batter's head"

Squeaky bum time - "the tense final stages of a league competition, esp from the point of view of the leaders"
Tapping-up - "the illicit practice of attempting to recruit a player while he is still bound by contract to another team
