3D Sound! This shit is crazy!

hmm, maybe the technology im thinking about is different, but i've heard stuff similar on 50 cent songs and others..... on "poor lil rich" they have the sound effect of a car racing by and it switches from one side to the other... "3D" sounding... and then on some other songs too..

lol, this "technology" has been around for decades. its called "panning". the engineer panned the sound of the car from one side to the other. its done on all albums you hear, every movie, tv show, and especially movies done in surround sound, well actually pretty much every movie is done in surround these days. take my word for this...i know a little something about this

i know what panning is... i've heard the chainsaw in that eminem "kill you" song go from left to right and i was amazed back in 99... but this has got to be different... i hear it above me, to the right of me, below me, and everywhere in between... from left to right is only 2d but this is different... it's amazing because you can hear it with two speakers... is there a program i can do this on??
it's not different. its surround sound panning. yes, you can do it in any DAW that offers mixing in surround like a pro tools tdm system.
you dont even need a DAW that supports surround sound mixing. if you know what you are doing you can immulate it in any regular DAW with some creative panning and automation.
and if you can distinguish where a sound is coming from , it has a sense of position, and you can point out where it is coming form , i.e. left to right, it is three-dimensional

it takes panning to another level. most people can tell the difference between the effect of panning and holophonic sound (which also goes UP AND DOWN [THEORETICALLY IMPOSSIBLE IN THIS CASE]). the sound is not actually behind you or whatever, but your brain thinks so by the special encoding process used.
the effect works best with headphones.
surround sound panning does nothing special in a 2 channel setting, it is just like regular panning (0-180 degrees limit in headphones). no different.

hymnz i wasnt as off the mark as you think as i said its panning. you can fake a sound as if it was behind you or in front of you with some know how, panning, and notch filtering, maybe a little automation. i've seen it done. if i wasnt a little drunk last night and my mind wasnt going faster than my fingers i could have expalined it better and been a little more clear, but the only thing i said about my instructors was that we listened to this example, or one like it in class.

the filters used are made up of quite complex algorithms, so unless you have hundreds of hours of spare time (everytime you put this to use) or a binaural recording setup (including dummy if possible

lol aight i mean we can agrue this all day but its pointless. i'm telling you with a notch filtering on the right frequencies and panning you can make a sound seem like it is behind you or in front of you in stereo, like i said i have seen it done by guys with decades of experience, who are grammy winners, grammy nods and have worked on big budget and big named projects for music and movies. dont want to believe me? its cool. i know what i have seen in studios and have learned from first hand experience

well, regular panning is only 0 to 180 degrees, not -180 to 180 degrees. it doesn't matter how much you want to automate it, it will not work. notch filtering is even worse. holophonic sound emulates the way the ear filters sound at different positions. this is dynamic so there is simply no automation function that can incorporate notch filtering and panning to alter a sound to the same degree as a dedicated program with accompanying algorithms.
