It is a common myth.

Though by no means healthy and proud of it, excess grease takes away from the quality of the cheesesteak. Genuine Philly cheesesteaks have mastered the grease to bread ratio, making them delectable and completely enjoyable in all aspects, including handling.

When trying to determine if you've been sold a counterfeit cheesesteak, the amount of grease is a good sign. If it's soaked, it's a knock-off attempt trying to take advantage of this misconception.

Yes, and you'll never find a cheesesteak not called a "Philly cheesesteak," which annoys me. They're cheesesteaks yes, but to call them Philly is an insult. Cheap immitations.

Once in the dining hall on campus, they had "Philly chicken cheesesteaks." No... no.

At school, they just called it a cheesesteak, or a chicken cheesesteak. I think I found part of a beaver's tail in a sandwich once. :(
In PA, they don't do it as much. They know they'd get shit for it. They didn't do it at my high school either.

Guess so. Cheesesteaks at my school still tasted like shit though..steak was stuck together like it was with Elmer's Glue. Hideous.

I seriously can't remember the last time I had a good philly cheesesteak. I made some myself quite awhile back and it came out pretty good but other than that I don't know of too many places here in Vancouver.
